Carroll's DVD Reviews #17

SIN CITY

A film that explores the dark and miserable town, Basin City, and tells the story of three different people, all caught up in violent corruption.

Released in 2005, this film completely blew my mind. I loved it! And not just because Bruce Willis is in it and I met him, nor because the beautiful and sexy Jessica Alba is in it playing the role of an exotic dancer. (Although, that helps.) LOL But because it is just an amazing movie that everyone should see.

This movie also features Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Benicio Del Toro, Elija Wood, Michael Clarke Duncan, Michael Madsen, Alexis Bledel and the late Brittany Murphy. It is loaded with talent from top to bottom. The writing is just as good as the acting.

I give it ... 9 and a half stars. (You're going to love this movie and best of all, you can probably get it for under 10 bucks. Maybe even under 7 dollars.)

THE SPIRIT

Rookie cop Denny Colt returns from the beyond as The Spirit, a hero whose mission is to fight against the bad forces in Central City.

Not even Scarlett Johanson could save this movie for me. Not that it was horrible, but it fell well short of my expectations. It also stars Samuel L. Jackson.

I felt it was trying to be the next "Sin City". It was filmed in similiar fashion. The acting is okay, no problems with that, just the writing. I did watch it all and still enjoyed it, just not as much as I anticipated and that is what led to the "let down". It's just that when I get movies like this, I expect a certain amount of "sexy" in it. Not a lot, but a good sprinkle. And when you have a Scarlett Johanson in your film, it shouldn't be that difficult to put a little "sexy" in it. (Or in this case, just a little bit more.)

I give it ..... 6 and half stars.

You can get it in the bargain bin for five dollars or less so that actually absorbs some of the sting from the let down. Well worth that price. Your kid will probably like it. But I paid the full 19.99 so, I do feel slightly cheated. LOL

See you next week with a couple more DVD;s for you to hopefully enjoy.
